From London to Dublin: One Investment Counsellor’s Journey at Fisher Investments
When pursuing a career in finance, there is one essential factor that many people overlook: the culture of the company you choose. If you’re aiming to build a fulfilling, long-term career, finding a firm that prioritises employee development and progression could be the difference between stagnation and success.
At Fisher Investments and its global affiliates, internal mobility is not only possible, but encouraged. Roberto started his career at Fisher Investments UK as a Client Service Associate (CSA) in London. Within two years, he relocated to Dublin to become an Investment Counsellor (IC) at Fisher Investments Ireland.
"This represented a significant milestone for me," Roberto says. "After proving myself in an introductory position, I was given the chance to move into a role with far greater responsibility and client exposure."
His transition was supported through Fisher’s internal IC Bridge Program. Fisher’s Bridge Programs enable employees to explore new roles through focused ‘day in the life’ experiences that build skills.
As Roberto explains, "The Investment Counsellor Bridge Program provided me with the tools, resources, and guidance needed to succeed. The IC position involves direct interaction with clients, and from the beginning of this transition, I received outstanding support from my team leader and from the internal training teams."
A move to Dublin
Relocating from London to Dublin in 2022 was a key step in Roberto’s progression, marking the next phase of his career. Fisher Investments Ireland’s Dublin office is a major hub for the company’s European operations, with growing teams of ICs supporting clients across markets.
He describes the office culture as open and meritocratic, where questions are encouraged and colleagues are quick to offer guidance. “Their willingness to collaborate and share knowledge made a significant difference in helping me adapt quickly and continue developing the skills needed to succeed.”
The office also shaped his experience. “The atmosphere in the Dublin office is characterised by positivity, strong motivation, and enthusiasm. It’s genuinely a pleasure to come into the office every day.”
Service over sales
The defining feature of the IC role is the absence of product sales. At many firms, an Investment Counsellor (or similar role) is a salesperson in disguise, but the roles are distinct at Fisher. The focus is on guiding clients through long-term investment decisions.
“The Investment Counsellor role is unique within the industry. Our primary objective is to support clients throughout their investment journey. The focus is not on selling products, but rather on first understanding the client’s needs and then providing the highest level of service aligned with their financial goals and preferences.”
This structure enables ICs to build deeper relationships with clients while focusing on long-term outcomes. “I’m very proud to be an Investment Counsellor because I consistently see the value that this role brings to clients. Every day I see how meaningful it is to help clients navigate the markets and stay focused on their objectives.”
A culture of support
Roberto attributes much of his success to Fisher’s encouraging environment. On-the-job training and mentorship are central to the company’s philosophy as an employer.
“The first role I held at Fisher was extremely important in helping me build the foundation I needed to succeed as an IC. By working closely with the ICs when I was a CSA, I was able to better understand their priorities.”
That foundation goes beyond technical knowledge. “Throughout my professional experience at Fisher, I’ve developed key skills that are essential for working in client service. This role requires a genuine interest in people. It also demands qualities such as patience, strong listening skills, emotional awareness, and the ability to understand clients’ concerns, expectations, and goals.”
In addition to hands-on experience, much of Roberto’s development came from collaboration with the people around him. “Colleagues are always ready to support one another, regardless of the situation or stage of the work process. There are no wrong questions.”
Your career, your way
The CSA to IC journey is a proven path at Fisher Investments and its affiliates, but it is earned through commitment and a desire to learn. The firm provides the map, the mentor, and the destination. However, not every career path is mapped out; many employees explore multiple departments in pursuit of their specific interests.
"At Fisher Investments, individuals who put in the effort and commit themselves can succeed," Roberto concludes. "Those who are motivated to perform at a high level can build a strong and rewarding career."
