Fundamental Equity Analyst
Kingfisher Executive Search (HK) Limited Hong Kong
Fundamental Equity Analyst
Our client is hiring fundamental equity analysts into several long/short teams in Asia Pacific. This is not a
single-pod, single-sector brief. Teams are adding coverage across industries; the common requirement
is the same: someone who actually likes taking companies apart, and who is technical enough to do it
properly.
Job Scope:
• Build and maintain full company models — income statement, cash flow, balance sheet, unit
economics, and the operating drivers behind them — that a PM can actually use to size risk.
• Do primary research: management and competitor meetings, channel checks, expert
conversations, industry fieldwork, and sell-side dialogue. Form an independent view. Do not
outsource the thesis to a note.
• Write investment work that is short, specific, and falsifiable: what you believe, why the market is
wrong or incomplete, what would change your mind, and how the position should be expressed.
• Cover a defined universe inside a sector team. Depth first. Breadth comes after you know the
companies.
• Track catalysts, estimate revisions, capital-structure change, and industry structure. Separate
noise from something that alters intrinsic value or the short thesis.
• Work with the team’s data and analytics resources. Comfort with alternative data, basic statistical
work, or Python/Excel automation is useful; it is not a substitute for accounting and industry
fluency.
• Debate ideas with the PM and other analysts. Defend the work. Update it quickly when the facts
move.
• Operate inside a multi-manager platform: risk limits, compliance, information barriers, and the
standard of documentation the firm requires.
Who this is for:
Essential
• Genuine interest in fundamental research — company analysis, not markets-as-a-sport. This
should be obvious from how you talk about businesses, not from a cover letter that says you are
passionate.
• Technical craft: clean financial modelling, accounting judgement (revenue recognition, working
capital, cash conversion, capital intensity, off-balance-sheet items), and the ability to link
operations to the statements.
• Two to eight years in a role where you were paid to understand companies: sell-side equity
research, long/short or long-only investing, investment banking coverage, or a comparable
research seat. Level is flexible across Associate to Senior Analyst.
• Evidence you can form and defend a variant view. Published notes, internal memos, or a live
book — the format matters less than whether the work is yours.
• Intellectual honesty. You change your mind when the evidence changes, and you can say what
you do not know.
• Pace and organisation. Several live names, a PM who wants answers the same day, and no
tolerance for sloppy numbers.
• Undergraduate degree or above. Strong academic record helps; it does not replace research
quality.
Good to have
• Existing sector depth in TMT, consumer, industrials, healthcare, financials, or another APAC-
relevant industry. Generalists with real research muscle will be mapped to a team.
• Prior long/short experience, or a sell-side / long-only analyst who has already thought in longs
and shorts rather than in ratings and target prices.
• Mandarin (spoken and written) or another North / Southeast Asian language, depending on the
book.
• Comfort working with datasets beyond reported financials — filings in local language, alternative
data, or simple quantitative overlays.
• Experience in Greater China, Japan, Korea, ASEAN, or pan-Asia ex-Japan coverage
